Connected Youth

There was a time when the older generation used to complain that the younger “hoody” generation couldn’t care less about the world around them, were only interested in their argos.co.uk discount codes or the money they got from selling their old phone in exchange for the latest in line, but now, looking at a number of social networking sites, I think we can safely say that that era is over. If it ever existed in the first place, that is, which is a good question. While it’s undoubtedly true that some of the “youth of today” are (and always were) more concerned with hanging around street corners and looking intimidating, you need only look at Facebook and other social networking sites to see a sharp increase in what the youth are doing to help people with life threatening diseases such as cancer and cystic fibrosis. And that’s something that certainly seems to be a surprise to some people.

This is one of the things that Facebook does very well: by connecting people and allowing them to start up and manage their own “groups”, more awareness can be spread about things which were before of little concern to all ages. One such thing is organ donation. With patients who are confined to their beds – often young themselves and looking to a better life, if only they can get the lung / organ transplant they need – blogging and communicating with everyone else, money is being raised faster than ever before, meaning that more and more people are seeing the benefits, all thanks to the youth of today and the technological revolution that so seems to baffle people of a certain age.
