Young people today have the ability to change the world with their new thoughts and powerful approach. The current youth will have to face a lot of new challenges and problems that older generations have never seen before. That is why it becomes more important for young generation today to build a stronger, educated and a more united generation now to be able to solve these problems when they are older.

Some of the most common problems that are going to affect the future of today’s youth are poverty, global warming, economic crisis and most importantly energy crisis. Young people need to learn to work together to deal with these major issues and many other trivial issues that they are going to face in the future. It is a well-known fact that teamwork and unity cannot be established unless you share a common goal. It is important to teach the youth about a right approach to leverage their potential so that they can change their lives as well as lives of children around the world.

Participating in charity or chanting slogans about going green are not the only solutions to the problem of poverty and energy crisis. However, it is also important to understand that sitting quietly behind composite doors Surrey is not going to help either. The key to initiate a big change is to start at grass-root level. Unless you understand and feel the local problems in the surroundings you live, you cannot help the global cause. Some people may feel it is too easy and ideal to talk about change but a difficult task to materialize it. I agree. But it is also a matter of pride that youth today are far more responsible and understanding than youth few decades ago. The invention of social networking sites like Facebook by a young technical mind is a burning example of the change that the youth today are capable of.

Being a social worker myself, I always advice young minds to find inspirational role models to look up to and set high goals for themselves. This inspiration can take them a long way in the path of achieving their dream. There is no experience as gratifying as working and meeting people around the world and helping them get basic amenities in life. It doesn’t matter whether you find an inspiration in Bill Gates or in Mother Teresa, the important thing is to be truly passionate about what you do and what you believe is right. Remember that no dream is too small to pursue and no dream is too big to achieve.

While a lot of youth groups function as a separate concern to the more formal institutions of the education system, schools still have a major part to play in engaging youths in the community. Lincoln Academy in Maine is a shining example in this regard. The school has a Climate Action Club which has had success with a reusable bag scheme and other recycling campaigns in the past. Now it wishes to take this one step further by starting its own renewable energy production. No other facilities in the area have such a system and the kids figured they could act as an example and a testing ground for the idea.

The plan is to design the system, compare solar panels available on the market, purchase and install the array in the school grounds. Using this data, the group intends to show the town how each business and individual can increase their power production. The project started with four solar panels but a typical array has up to 600 panels. The group has installed micro-inverters which attach to each panel and output AC electricity individually as opposed to using one large inverter to output AC current at one source. This provides a massive increase to the capacity of the system.

Not content with getting the town moving down the road to electrical self-sufficiency, the Climate Action Club plans to keep working to increase its impact. It is currently taking part in an online voting grant worth $2,500 which will buy two more solar panels for the project. With small steps like these, youth groups around the world can exert a significant influence on global energy usage and, just as importantly, how seriously this is taken by future generations. The baton of saving the planet is being passed on to those who will have to live with the consequences.

Youth unemployment was the main topic of discussion at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York, US, a few weeks ago as dozens of representatives from governments, the business sector and civil society groups gathered to discuss ways how they can better collaborate to tackle the problem. Monday’s meeting was a key preparatory event for the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)’s annual ministerial review in July, which is set to focus this year on the issues of employment and decent work to eradicate poverty.

Youth unemployment has soared in both affluent and poor countries since the global financial crisis began in 2008, with the largest annual increase on record reported in 2009. It was reported that, at one point, nearly 76 million people aged between 15 and 24 were unemployed worldwide. Nigeria, with a population of over 150 million citizens, has millions of unemployed youths, and the President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, has made youth employment a priority, in a bid to avert revolution from the angry and jobless youths, something most governments with problems are scared of.

Many young people with jobs are also suffering. ECOSOC said it now estimates that about 152 million young workers live in households that are below the poverty line, and they comprise almost a quarter of the total numbers of working poor. Hopefully, these meetings will lead to direct action. The involvement of youth groups and other parts of civil society should bode well for the outcome. Wherever you are, whatever your situation, it’s important to try to get involved to effect change. Whether you are based in makeshift huts in Gabon or basement conversions in London, the world needs to hear from you. It is hard to get your voice heard in this world, but meetings like the one at the UN put youths at the top of the agenda.

It’s usually people who have suffered or gone through a particularly harrowing situation who can empathise with those going through a similar trauma. But off late, there seems to be a wave of change, particularly among the youth. They want to see a change and they have no qualms about rolling up their sleeves and getting their hands dirty. I recently read about some business grads from the top business schools in the world who gave the campus recruitments a miss to follow their hearts desire of helping the underprivileged.

No doubt they could have raked in the moolah at Wall Street without much effort. For them, however, the thrill lay in making a difference in the lives of others. Not an easy task unless they could feel the pain and agony of the insignificant other in this world. Not for them the easy money or an enigin scam net that could fetch millions. It is such youth who are worthy of accolades that could shame agencies and corporates who are out there to hog the limelight and get some mileage with the right amount of publicity thrown in.

Strangely enough, for every such case that sees the light of day, there are many more that toil silently. They ask nothing for themselves nor expect anything. Just that burning desire to make a difference in the lives of others is what eggs them on. Be it working among the refugees providing medical assistance in Sudan or among the abused children in the underbelly of New York, they plod on silently. Needless to add, their work, dedication and sacrifice are not in vain for many are those who rise up from the ashes to lead a life of decency. The seed for such a change are sown by people who opt to walk a path less trodden.

If you are a youth then chances are high that you have heard that oft repeated saying that the future belongs to the youth. Whoever coined that phrase hit the nail on the head. For some it may sound like some lofty statement whose meaning is too complex to understand and so finds no place in their list of things to do in life. Fact is, it does. For every single youth who chooses not to look deep within that statement and understand its meaning, there are several who quietly choose to tread a path less trodden and make a difference in their chosen field.

This is a far cry from those who talk and dream while sitting on changing room benches and, well, do nothing about it. Youth today seem to have changed considerably from what they were about a decade or two ago.

The other day, I read about a couple of people fresh out of one of the top management schools in the world, consciously choosing to chuck the big bucks careers and head to villages in poor countries. Their sole aim and objective being to teach kids who cannot afford to go to school. In their own way, they chose to get down to brass-tacks and make a change where it actually matters. Mind you, this is something the government should have been doing or are perhaps doing with not enough success. Their effort will result in hundreds of children make a new beginning, a new phase in life never before seen in their families. Perhaps these youth will be recognised by the local authorities, perhaps not. It hardly matters. They could easily have earned their share of fame and fortune but consciously choose to shun everything to make a change in the life of others. May their tribe increase!

It is very important for the world as a whole to begin to change the way in which people act towards each other and towards the earth. Climate change, animal cruelty, and human suffering are all caused to a large extent by the general person’s lack of compassion for things that they do not feel affects them. If each person could spend a day in the life of a person or animal that was being mistreated by others, they would feel compelled to act in a different way fro the rest of their life.

One thing that is being done by the group Concern Universal is that they are trying to raise awareness of the unethical treatment of those people working in clothing factories amongst other things. Most people look to buy clothes from the cheapest possible place, with little or no thought about why the clothes may be that cheap. Surely when you are able to buy a pair of jeans for less than £10 or a t-shirt for £2, someone must be losing out somewhere down the line. People are working in factories for tiny wages in order to maximize profits for the companies.

If we all took more notice about where we were buying from and how these garments were produced and distributed, we would be able to make a difference to our spending patterns and habits. Concern Universal helps people to set up their own fair trade businesses and projects, so that people in other countries can make garments themselves and get paid a fair price for them. People seem more concerned about saving a couple of pounds buying a cheaper t-shirt, without thinking of the consequences. They would not dream of going for the cheapest possible basement conversions in London, as they would know that it is a good idea to pay a little more for better a better quality job, yet they are not bothered about the consequences of buying the cheapest possible clothes.

Is charity a natural talent? I am of the view that charity in most cases is a natural talent. There are people who are easily moved by the plight of others, while there are others who just don’t care. A friend of mine who is filing a Cancer Mis Diagnosis claim for his father recently told me about the pain other cancer patients he met were going through. He said that the pain his dad is undergoing has made him highly sensitive to those who are suffering from cancer.

There are those who feel sorry for others and then there are those who feel sorry and do something about it. Henry Maw is one such boy who feels sorry for the orphans in Rwanda, Africa and is doing something about it. And guess how old is he? Henry is just 10 years old.

Henry, like other boys of his age, is a video game addict. But everything started when Henry got into trouble due to excessive game playing. Thankfully Henry has a very supportive dad who asked his son to follow his passion and to channel it to something creative. This is when Henry started to draw concepts and created ideas for his game. Very soon he and his dad were contacting programmers who could make Henry’s ideas become reality. The game that came out of Henry and the programmer’s hard work is called Monkeyberry. The game can be bought as an app for $0.99. 20% of the profit goes to charity. To be precise the charity is used to help the orphans in a village in Rwanda and also for table-to-table, an organization that is dedicated to redistribute cooked and perishable food donated by restaurants and supermarkets. Honestly, I feel a bit jealous of Henry, may be some day I would also be able to help quite a few needy and then I will also be among the ones who not only feel sorry for others but also do something about it.

If you are a young person in the world, and want to know what you can do to make a diference in the world, maybe it is time to take a look at things that many people are involved with each and every day that causes suffering and pain to millions of animals on this planet. Our western civilisation has come to think that it is ok to treat animals as products instead of living, breathing, feeling beings, that we share the world with.

Some remarkable young people have decided to make a difference to the world, and are working for many different charities, trying to raise awareness, change minds, rescue animals, and do just about anything they can to make the world a more peaceful and pleasant place for all those that reside here. Animal rights charities are often given a bad press by those that do not agree with them, but I think it is crazy, that people actually want to go against people trying to cause less harm to others.

One great charity that is operating at the moment, and has a large younger following is Animal Equality. They have many good projets operating in a number of countries, which are making a real difference to the world. The more young people that can get involved in this type of activity, the better, for all of our futures. It is not just a group of ladies in suits saying that things are bad, and need to change, it is people from all parts of society, and more and more, this is children, teenagers, and young adults. The future belongs in their hands, and if they act now and act strong, they really can make a difference. Suffering should not be tolerated in any form by anyone, and our generation seemed to forget about that.

I have always been interested in missions and charities and my heart is not bent towards a particular kind of need or group of people. By saying that I do not mean that people who pursue particular issues facing our society today are wrong; I think they are doing very well by focusing their energy on one single cause. After all if you want to make an impact with your efforts it would only be possible if you point towards a single direction.

Recently, I had the opportunity to go to India and visited a number of orphanages there. Even though these were called orphanages, in reality they were children homes for children who belong to the poorest of families, which were not able to feed them properly or send them to school. There were a few orphans and a few who had lost one of their parents, but overall all these children came from a background where they were not wanted and the only way they could survive was by helping their parents in building roads and other hard jobs.

When I looked at the slums and the villages these kids came from, my heart was completely overwhelmed and many times I could not hold my tears back. When you see the open bathrooms they use, you will certainly forget the bathroom design Richmond has in offer. For the first time I wanted to have so much money that I could feed and help all these kids who live in extreme poverty. I know these feelings normally fade as soon as we come back to our developed societies, but I have decided to visit India or any other country for that matter, that has many suffering from lack, so that I would continue to have a sensitive heart towards others'needs and may be someday make a big difference for them.

Remember a couple of years ago when the power of Facebook prevented another Simon Cowell X-Factor clone from making it to the Christmas number one spot? I can only imagine how livid he was the Joe McElderry (last seen hamming it up on a reality TV show) became the only X-Factor act in history not to secure the coveted accolade. Simon may no longer be appearing on the show, but he’s still there behind the scenes, and he might have to get used to the fact that this year’s winner is going to face some stiff competition – and from a local charity single too!

A youth choir from Wotton-under-Edge in Gloucestershire have recorded an original composition called “Meet Me in Winter” to raise money for the local homeless charity and the national organization, Shelter. As you can imagine, lots of friends and family members had been buying the CD and it even got a few plays on the local radio. Then the power of the Internet took over and word spread about the catchy song leading to more and more CDs being produced and sold nationwide in record stores. Suddenly their aim to provide a few new lockers and other needed supplies for their local homeless was easily achieved and they’ve now set their sights much higher and are hoping to be able to completely renovate the building the charity uses to provide food and support for those who need it.

Perhaps dreams of the Christmas number one are a little ambitious, but we’ve all seen how Internet campaigns can take on a life of their own thanks to social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Wouldn’t it be great if the same people who coordinated the nation so effectively to ensure that Rage Against the Machine took the top spot in 2009 could use their skills to get “Meet Me in Winter” to the top of the charts in 2011?
